JOHANNA ALANKO

Johanna Alanko is a painter and ceramic artist working between Finland and Poland. She focuses on more abstract expression in her paintings, and she uses various materials and techniques in her pieces.

“My Karelian pies are a renewed portrayal of traditional Karelian pies. Karelian pies came to Finland alongside Karelian migrants. As some may know, in Karelia, the pies were jokingly made “according to the looks of the maker’s own”. To me, this piece is a small ode to Karelian women and a part of my artistic research on time, my own Karelian roots, and the effects of the past on the present and future.”
